Professional Rugby League Football Clubs: Sydney Roosters

We got the wonderful opportunity to see saw a professional rugby league game, particularly a Sydney Roosters game. I recently learned that the Roosters are in fact one of the most successful clubs in Australian rugby league history, having won twelve New South Wales Rugby League and National Rugby League titles, and several other competitions. On this particular day, they happened to win as well, defeating the Manly Sea Eagles.

*interesting fact: the club was actually founded all the way back in 1908! Then they played under the name "Eastern Suburbs" and only became known as the "Sydney Roosters" in the year 2000.

Another thing I noticed was that there were not nearly as many spectators in attendance at this rugby league game as were at the Sydney Swans AFL game, although the rugby fans seemed to be far more emotionally invested in the game.

As far as the game itself goes, to me it seemed that the players were playing a version of "hot potato" until the man with the ball decides to barrel through the opponents after gaining enough momentum, culminating in his getting smushed by the opposition.

Swimming in Australian Culture

As Sydney is a city built around the water, there are many waterways available to its residents, such as beaches, harbors, coves, and rivers. The majority of its suburbs therefore have a public pool or access to an ocean pool.

Swimming is, in fact, a compulsory activity in early education. All schools have an annual swimming carnival.

To that end, it's not surprising that swimming is the most popular sport in Australia for children ages 5-14. It is a part of their school curriculum.

We were fortunate enough to be able to go see the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (and the pool where the US swimmer Phelps competed in his first Olympic competition at age 15!!) for the NSW State Age Championships which was a very impressive venue that was built for the Olympics when they were held in Sydney in the year 2000.
